Fall on Stage: Sylvia at the Theatre Workshop of Nantucket

This September, the Theatre Workshop of Nantucket brings laughter, heart, and a touch of canine chaos to the stage with their production of Sylvia, running September 10 – October 5, 2025 at Bennett Hall.

Written by A.R. Gurney, Sylvia is a witty and warm comedy about love, loyalty, and the complicated dynamics between humans and their dogs. When Greg, a middle-aged man in search of meaning, brings home Sylvia—a street-smart stray with a big personality—his marriage, career, and sanity are thrown into delightful disarray.

After twenty-two years of suburban child-rearing, Greg and Kate are finally enjoying their next chapter in Manhattan. Kate’s teaching career is soaring, Greg’s finance career is winding down—and then Sylvia bounds into their lives.

Found (or perhaps chosen) by Greg in Central Park, Sylvia is a sprightly, streetwise dog with a sharp wit, a mind of her own, and a surprising knack for stirring up trouble. As Greg becomes increasingly enchanted with his new canine companion, Kate sees Sylvia not just as a dog, but as a high-spirited rival for her husband’s affections.

What unfolds is a clever, heartwarming, and delightfully offbeat exploration of modern relationships, identity, and the unexpected ways we find connection.

With equal parts bite and charm, Sylvia is a sophisticated romp that asks: who’s really in the doghouse?
