The largest and most visited Nantucket museum is the Nantucket Whaling Museum. It features a restored candle factory from 1846 and was renovated and expanded in 2005.  The top-quality exhibition space, fully accessible rooftop observation deck overlooking Nantucket harbor, and the sperm whale skeleton are not to miss. In addition to the Whaling Museum, visit their historic sites, many of which are located just outside of Town.

One of Nantucket’s greatest treasures is the history of the lightship basket and the Lightship Basket Museum. Located just a few blocks from the heart of town, the Lightship Basket Museum hosts great classes & programs for crafters from all walks of life. It is home to an annual exhibit that changes each year and some other amazing exhibits from master craftsmen.

The Nantucket Arts Council has been supporting the arts on Nantucket since 1973. The council hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including their very popular Downtown Celebrity Concerts.

The MMA hosts a variety of programs & classes for eager scientists of all ages throughout the summer seasons. Be sure to visit their calendar which lists all the great opportunities for nature walks & more around the Island. Additionally, you can visit the amazing Aquarium to get up close and personal with some local aquatic species and the Loines Observatory for astronomical observations!

Finally, we have the Nantucket Dreamland Theatre, hosting some of the island’s most wonderful events year-round. The Dreamland is the island’s go-to for viewings of the latest movies and fantastic live theater for kids & adults alike. It also has a great calendar of unique events worth checking out!

Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum

The Lifesaving Museum (as it is informally called), is one of the island’s favorite museums and is run by the Egan Maritime Institute. This special museum out on Polpis Road honors Nantucket’s lifesavers and their legacy of selflessness and service so that they are never forgotten.
