Welcome to September on Nantucket!
The secret is out… it’s a beautiful time of the year with plenty to do to keep your little ones busy. If you are homeschooling on Nantucket, or just looking for a little educational boost, here are some adventures, events and lessons you may want to consider from our wonderful local organizations!
Nantucket Conservation Foundation
The “Staycation Family Scavenger Hunt” is a free, self-guided, self-paced adventure at six scenic Nantucket Conservation Foundation properties, such as Norwood and Squam Farms. Registration is not required but encouraged. Prizes are awarded for those who can complete all six properties! To get started- follow the directions in the link to each of the sites. Look for the Staycation Scavenger Hunt welcome sign and follow the directions from there. The contest runs through September 15th, though you can always go out and explore! Nantucket Atheneum
View their calendar here for updated information on events such as Story Walks in the garden and Virtual Music in the Morning with Lizza from Nanpuppets. Find out what crafts they are offering in the Grab and Go craft kits found on the Weezie porch for kids of all ages! Login with your library card to order library books, or check out eBooks, eComicBooks, music and movies! You can also find online activities like the NASA Science Space Place.

Artists Association of Nantucket
Offering a variety of classes through the fall and into winter. Fourteen fall courses include wheel throwing, comic art, clay sculpture and digital drawing for a variety of age groups. Register here.
Nantucket Historical Association
The Nantucket Whaling Museum offers an audio tour in both English and Spanish! They also have a newly renovated children’s room, the Discovery Center.
If you are looking for ACKtivities to do at home, you can visit the “Learn” section of their website. Download their Discovery Center “Stay at Home” ACKtivity Books including a Lighthouse Coloring Book, Historic House Cut-outs, and a lesson on the art of scrimshaw!
If you are looking to get outside, the historic properties including Old Mill, Old Gaol, and Greater Light are closed. However, they are still open to the public and you can still visit the grounds and gardens during daylight hours.
The NHA also offers a free after school program in the winter months. Check out their Youth & Family Programs for more.
Nantucket Community Music Center
Private and semi-private music lessons can be scheduled at the Nantucket Community Music Center. From Piano to Ukulele, Tin Whistle to Voice lessons, there is something for everyone.
Lessons are offered in-person and online.
Nantucket Ice
Learn to Skate at Nantucket Ice! Programs include basic skills, competitive classes as well as synchronized skating. The Nantucket Skating Club also offers more advanced classes. Note: these are 8-week programs starting for ages 4 and up. Check out the action at the rink on our Nantucket Ice Web Cam.
Miacomet Golf Course
Learn to Golf… at the world-renowned Miacomet Golf Club. Private, 30-minute lessons are available for Junior golfers 18 years and younger.

And we like to think this is always in the back of everyone’s minds, you can start a clean team and hit the beaches. There are many hiking trails, kayaking adventures and bike rides to be had and playgrounds are open! Stay safe, get outside and enjoy!
