The Cottage at Theatre Workshop of Nantucket
If you’re looking for a wildly entertaining night of theater, Nantucket’s longest-running professional theatre has just the ticket. Opening its 69th season, the Theatre Workshop of Nantucket presents The Cottage, a razor-sharp romantic farce by Sandy Rustin (renowned for her adaptation of last year’s hit, Clue).
Set in a charming yet chaotic 1920s English cottage, The Cottage dives headfirst into drama and hilarity with a scandalous revelation. Sylvia Van Kipness has just confessed to her brother-in-law and lover, Beau, that she’s planning to leave his brother, her husband. What follows is a whirlwind of secrets, misunderstandings, and outrageous comedy as husbands, wives, and lovers crash through the cottage doors. With its clever wordplay and nod to Noel Coward’s timeless humor, The Cottage promises an evening of comedy gold with a modern twist.
Meet the Characters Bringing the Mayhem
Sylvia Van Kipness (played by Ellyn Heald): Graceful, intelligent, and ready to disrupt her world, Sylvia is on a mission to live her truth, no matter the emotional chaos it causes. You may remember Ellyn from Broadway’s The Hills of California.
Beau Van Kipness (played by David Andrew Morton): The charming yet slightly clueless brother caught between love and loyalty. David has graced the stage in To Kill a Mockingbird and Jersey Boys on Broadway’s First National Tour.
Clarke Van Kipness (played by Abe Goldfarb): The betrayed husband returning for revenge. Abe’s past credits include performances in Broadway’s Beetlejuice.
Marjorie (played by Drew Springer-Miller): Clarke’s sweet, innocent wife… or is she? Marjorie is full of surprises.
Deirdre (played by Cathryn Wake): Sylvia’s sharp-tongued sister and the chaos catalyst who keeps the drama bubbling. You might recognize Cathryn from Broadway’s The Great Comet.
Richard (played by Atticus Shaindlin): A proper British gentleman trying to keep things from unraveling, albeit unsuccessfully.
Director Justin Cerne captures the show’s heart when he describes it as “a nonstop rollercoaster of love triangles, hilarious misunderstandings, and nicotine-fueled madness. It’s Coward meets Clue meets pure comedy gold.”
