The Nantucket Land Bank’s annual Cross-Island Hike returns this September, offering one of the best ways to experience Nantucket beyond the beaches and downtown streets.

8:00 a.m. start — finish at your own pace

This year’s hike begins at Tom Nevers Fairground and travels across the island to Settler’s Landing on Madaket Harbor, taking hikers through some of Nantucket’s beautiful conservation lands and lesser-traveled landscapes.

The Cross-Island Hike has become a favorite early-fall tradition, giving participants a chance to experience just how much open space connects different parts of Nantucket. Along the way, expect a mix of trails, conservation land, dirt roads, bike paths, and other terrain as the route makes its way west across the island.

Things to Know

The full Cross-Island Hike is a long day, so hikers should plan according to their own pace and physical abilities. You don’t necessarily have to complete the entire route-choosing a portion of the hike can be a great way to take part while exploring a part of the island you may not normally visit.

Come prepared with comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, weather-appropriate clothing, lunch, snacks, and a refillable water bottle. As with any walk through Nantucket’s conservation areas, keep an eye out for poison ivy and remember to check for ticks afterward.

Getting to the Start

Because parking at the starting point is limited, the Nantucket Land Bank is offering transportation to the beginning of the hike, with advance shuttle registration required.

Importantly, there will not be shuttle service from the end of the hike. Participants should arrange transportation from Settler’s Landing ahead of time, whether that means coordinating cars with friends, arranging a taxi or rideshare, or planning another pickup.

Whether you take on the entire route or join for just a section, the Cross-Island Hike is a unique opportunity to see Nantucket from a different perspective and explore the network of protected open spaces that stretches across the island.
