Situated between Surfside and ’Sconset, Tom Nevers and Madequecham are more secluded neighborhoods with large open spaces, pristine beaches and gorgeous family homes on larger parcels of land. It is believed that around 1725 Tom Never was a Native American boy born on Nantucket who was later hired to be in charge of a whale lookout station on this side of the island.

What To Do

Tom Nevers Field is a large park with multiple softball fields, basketball hoops and large playground. Where else can you play ball with 180-degree ocean views?

Beaches

Tom Nevers Beach is the most popular beach in this area. With heavy surf and coarse sand, it’s a great spot for surfcasting. Note: there are no lifeguards or facilities here, but there are public restrooms at the Tom Nevers field.

Nantucket Beach is a mile-long beach that is now part of the Nantucket Conservation Foundation and is easily accessible. Fun fact: During WWII the U.S. Navy conducted air-to-ground military training exercises here and is known as the “Formerly Used Defense Site” or FUDS.

Events in Tom Nevers

The Nantucket Island Fair takes place each September at the Tom Nevers fields. Offering various contests, games and events, the fair is a great introduction to Fall on the island and offers something for the whole family. 

The 2018 Island Fair will be held September 15 – 16, 2018. The event is $15 per car or $5 per biker or walker.
