Winter on Nantucket – Ice Boats & Pond Hockey

Nantucket Activities

winter on nantucket

People who don’t spend time on Nantucket in the winter always ask me, “what do you do in the winter if you live there year-round?” The island is a beautiful place with a tremendous amount of activities during every season, not just summer. This past weekend it was a frigidly cold 15 degrees. The ferries to and from Nantucket didn’t run and the flight schedule was limited. The harbor was completely frozen over and it was dangerously cold. So… of course we look for fun things to do outside. Some people chase Slurpee waves at the South Shore Beaches. Some go for hikes with their dogs. I even saw people jogging on our great bike paths. My son Fisher and I joined a group of friends to go ice boating and pond skating. We went out on the ice boats for most of the afternoon. We brought a barbecue and cooked hot dogs and sausages in the fire pit. And we flew our drone by the fire to stay warm and capture some fun video. We shared our skates with coworkers and our friends shared their ice boats. It was a great time with our wonderful community. These are the things we do on Nantucket in the winter. Enjoy the video from my drone of our ice boating adventures on Hummock Pond and take a look at the hashtag #SlurpeeWaves on Instagram to see some of Nantucket’s best photographers capturing a unique winter moment on Nantucket.
