Nantucket Water Use Restrictions: A Community Reminder for Renters & Homeowners
Whether you’re spending a week on island or you’ve called Nantucket home for years, preserving our shared resources is part of island life.
Due to a mechanical failure of the Town’s primary water pump and ongoing drought conditions, the Nantucket Water Department has issued an emergency ban on all non-essential outdoor water use. This is a temporary but critical step to protect the island’s water supply.
This restriction applies to all properties connected to the municipal water system. Homes with private wells are not included, though conservation is strongly encouraged across the board. While you may not know if your rental property is on sewer or well this is a critical time to be aware of water usage and be sensitive to usage.
Indoor water use of course is allowed, but all are encouraged to conserve: shorten showers, postpone laundry or dishwasher loads, and avoid letting taps run unnecessarily.
Why Conserving Water Matters:
Water reserves are critically low
Replenish water storage
Ensure supply for public health and emergency response
Sustain service during peak demand periods
Fisher Real Estate encourages all renters, homeowners, and service professionals to be mindful stewards of our island’s essential systems.
