2017 NANTUCKET EVENTS CALENDAR
April 28-30, Daffodil Festival
For those that live here all winter long, this tiny flower tells us we have made it through the winter and that Spring will grace us soon. Not just for year-rounders, however, if you belong to a garden club or car club this too is for you. Between the Annual Daffodil Show approved by the American Daffodil Society and the beautiful antique cars that grace the cobblestone streets, everyone will enjoy this weekend. Oh wait, you – the fashionista of all things yellow, and that does include Veuve – this is event is not to be missed.. Main Street in ‘Sconset become like the stands in Saratoga with wide brimmed hats and gourmet picnic baskets, just no horses!
May 17-21, Wine & Food Festival
Sip, savor, and study the making of fine wines, new producers and the classics. Tastings, dinners, grand presentations this is not to be missed! From the novice to the serious, this event will educate and stimulate the rock-gut connoisseur to the advanced oenophile.
June, Nantucket Preservation Month Symposium June 6-8
A month full of preservation minded events and activities including lectures, film screenings, open-houses, demonstrations celebrating the best of Nantucket. A three-day symposium that explores Nantucket’s Golden Age architecture, interiors and historic landscapes with behind the scenes tours, stimulating lectures, and thought provoking conversations.
June 16-18, Book Festival
You know it’s a cool book festival when the signature events are “Authors in Bars”, a Pig Roast at the famed Cisco Brewery and a little Typewriter Rodeo! “If indeed the printed word is doomed, the very last place is right here where books will not just be read, but will be read with rapture.” – Christopher Lydon –
June 24-29, Nantucket Athenaeum Dance Festival
The best of the best from all over the world celebrating dance in a variety of genres and ages. The festival features contemporary works performed by the arts best dancers from multiple dance companies.
June 21-26, Film Festival
Cultural awareness and appreciation of the art of screenwriting is what this weekend is all about! A celebrated program for over 20 years, this event has become known as the premiere must attend film festival in the world. Don’t miss the late night story telling events!!
July 4 – Independence Day Downtown Celebration & Fireworks
Fireworks, Pie Eating Contest and the best water fight on a Main Street anywhere in America, as proclaimed by me! Oh yes and a day at the beach…..could this celebrate this great Nation any better!?!
July 7-9, Nantucket Yoga Festival
Stretch your body, thinking and all parts of your physical and transcendental self with yoga for beginners and aerial yoga for the initiated! Incredible workshops and presenters – where better to clear your soul and connect with Mother Ocean then on an island surrounded by Mermaids!
July 12-15, Comedy Festival
Laugh your glasses off with this hilariously entertaining festival. They say laughter is the cure for what ails you and I say there is nothing better than the laugh off between New York and Boston, almost as anticipated as the annual Sox v Yanks Series at Fenway!
July 18-20, Nantucket Garden Festival
Amazing designs, incredible gardens, world famous designers and 2 amazing Chefs and plenty of hands on workshops to get your fingers digging into this nutrient dense Nantucket Soil!
August 12, Boston Pops
One of a handful of non-festival events that made our travel list and well worth to celebrate. Sand in your toes, beverage in hand, lobster roll in your belly and the incredible performance of the Boston Pops….did we mention this takes place right on the beach?!?!
August 12-20, Nantucket Race Week
For the experienced sailor, or sailor life wannabe this event will get your blood flowing as you traverse the water and sail in Nantucket’s tricky winds and fast paced course. After working hard all day the social events, and evening presentations will have you feeling a bit salty and ready for more.
September 14-17, The Nantucket Project
Who says we are just an island of sand and surf bums?? This event brings emerging and proven thought leaders from all over the world who are shaping and literally altering, defining and pioneering the future of our world. The theme changes every year so stay tuned, attend and your thinking will be changed forever.
October TBD, Egan Maritime Festival
This fun family event celebrates the best of Nantucket’s history, the joy of living 30 miles out to sea and our time honored maritime activities. Many free, fun, hands on activities for all ages.
October 7, Cranberry Festival
Playful and fun for the attendees but serious work if you are harvesting these little red nuggets. Music, hay rides, food and of course, juice. Tour the bogs, help harvest and then have an old-fashioned sack race with your kids. As American as July 4th is on Main Street, this event is the throwback country fair that we all need to keep enjoying!
October 12th-15th, Sustainable Nantucket – Nantucket Grown Food Festival
October TBD, Linda Loring Bird Festival, exact dates TBD
We are more than food, wine, and fish…..while you may not see a snowy owl this time of year you will see or hear the plethora of ornithological species that fly in around and through this incredible habitat.
November, Thanksgiving Festivities
Not a festival per se but an incredible weekend filled with fun folic and the traditional cold turkey plunge. Get your run on early with our 5K, plunge, then warm up at any of our fine restaurants! Of course after turkey comes Santa – get your list in early so the elves have time to complete your littles wishes! A little known secret is that some say this is their favorite week of the year.
Dec. 1-3, Christmas Stroll Weekend
Other than ringing in the new year, this is the last big event of the year. Regardless of the weather this is an energetic celebration that will get you in the holiday spirit of thankfulness and gratitude. The shops are open, windows decorated, everyone is in great spirits and the restaurants are celebrating! This is just an amazing time to come back to the island and get your last fill of Nantucket…….until of course New Year’s Eve at the Nantucket Hotel.
