Thanks to the Nantucket Chamber of Commerce and Emily Elisabeth Photography for their guest blog on the Nantucket Stroll holiday. If you have never been to this incredible event, these photos will make you want to book your weekend trip for next year’s Nantucket Stroll!

The Nantucket Chamber’s Christmas Stroll has evolved from an effort by local shopkeepers of the day, way back in 1973, to lure locals to shop at island stores rather than ferry ‘off-island’ to Hyannis and beyond to shop there! The first Friday in December 1973 shopkeepers remained open for three extra hours for a Christmas Shoppers Stroll with encouraging results. Enticing island shoppers with sweets and treats, the effort was amply rewarded with a considerable local spend and was immediately declared a resounding success. Succeeding years, crowds grew beyond wildest expectations such that Nantucket Christmas Stroll in now one of the most universally-recognized holiday celebrations in the US and, possibly, the world.

The Nantucket Chamber has always squired shopkeepers, transportation companies, lodging establishments, restaurants and other island enterprises and event islanders themselves through the process of initiating and growing such a monumental event for a very small island. While the three-day event is perceived as seamless to visitors and attendees, many hours of expert behind the scenes effort at Nantucket Chamber confer the magic on all the moving parts that coalesce to deeply inspire and awe thousands of attendees and participants.

From a one-night event almost five decades ago to a three-day holiday jubilee, Nantucket Chamber has been the steady hand behind the advertising, marketing, PR, social media and organizing efforts. The focus of the Chamber’s efforts has been to induce and encourage visitors and islanders to “shop local” for the entirety of the Stroll.

This year’s Stroll, presented by The Steamship Authority, is truly special. Paying tribute to our beloved Fred Rogers, of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood fame, the Nantucket Chamber has branded the 45th Annual Nantucket Stroll It’s a Beautiful Stroll in the Neighborhood, hearkening back to the simple but powerful song Fred Rogers sang at every show’s start. Mr. Rogers was Nantucket’s neighbor, too, whose “Crooked House” in Madaket was his summer home for decades.

Christmas Stroll is always a Beautiful Stroll in the Neighborhood. From its nearly 100 illuminated holiday trees, wreaths, holly and gorgeous shop windows — each decorated to Christmas perfection — to Christmas carols and music lilting through the air, a special magic beckons visitors. Islanders gather and see friends and colleagues to celebrate the season.

The island, especially during Stroll, inspires and imbues peace, love of neighbor and community, good will to those on Nantucket and around the world.

Thanks again to the Nantucket Chamber of Commerce for all this great information and photo album from Nantucket Christmas Stroll 2019!
