The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) welcomes the community to learn about one of Nantucket’s most iconic historic landmarks and the history of harvest season on the island.  The program will also celebrate the 125th anniversary since the organization purchased the Old Mill in 1897. Admission to the celebration will be FREE for all. This program will be held on Saturday, October 22, from 11 am-4 pm at the Old Mill, 50 Prospect Street.

“The NHA is thrilled to offer this festive and educational program to the public, providing an opportunity to learn about the history of the Old Mill and observe how it was and still is operated today,” says Niles Parker, Gosnell Executive Director.

Attendees are invited to participate in activities exploring the operation of the mill, including demonstrations and an artifact table, as well as crafts featuring the mill and utilizing corn byproducts. Members of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe will join the NHA in this celebration to share several native traditions around harvest. Special cornmeal-based nibbles will be sold by locally-owned Snick Snack truck for attendees.

We warmly invite all from the community to join the NHA in celebrating this anniversary year of an iconic island site, and become acquainted with how different Nantucket communities recognized harvest season,” says Jocelyn Wong, Community Outreach Coordinator.

Built in 1746, the Old Mill was sold on two previous occasions before it appeared on the auction block in 1897, when the NHA purchased the property for $885. Believed to be the oldest American windmill in continuous operation, it continues to grind corn into cornmeal today. The Old Mill was designated an American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark in 1992. Learn more about the history of the Old Mill here.
