Fishing Report

The reason we love to guide so much, is that we love showing people something they may never have seen. The wonder in their eyes always lifts my days and makes us realize how lucky we are to spend so much time on the water.   The sights our clients have seen in the last week have kept us filled with energy in an otherwise tiring time of the season.  When you come upon an edge and see birds crashing down, it is so much fun to see people react.

We say all this, because as you can guess, fishing is just awesome.  As we spoke about last week, we are still loaded with bait and we are still seeing the benefits of it.

From the beach, the south shore is still holding plenty of Striped Bass. These fish continue to be smaller, but are quite active.  Miacomet and Tom Nevers have had the best reports.  Most of the best fishing is moving into the twilight/evening hours.   The harbor also still has plenty of fish and these are probably the biggest fish in our fishery now, despite the water temps into the high sixty’s.  There are some really fun fish to be caught in the harbor, especially if you can get to the coatue side. The best fishing is at night or at dusk.  On both the south shore and the harbor use a soft bait or a slow top water plug for the best action.

If you’re on a boat, the Rips are fantastic.  The rips are loaded with a variety of bait.  The fish continue to be on the smaller side, but the quantity of fish is exciting.  The rips to the West of Nantucket continue to produce a lot of top water action.  The rips to the east are covered in birds and loaded with fish.  You’ll use a bigger swimming plug or a top water Pencil Popper in this water for the best success.

Bluefishing is really, really good right now.  The North Shore continues to be the hot spot, from the boat and the beach. It’s great to hear of Anglers of all ages having consistent success bending rods. Throw a Hopkins as far out as possible and you retrieve at a fast pace for constant action.  Great Point is also loaded with Bluefish (and lots of Bass too…)! It feels like its been a few years since that fishery had constant action.   In fact, Great point has been producing a bunch of bass early in the AM.

And for the table fare!  Bottom fishing is still that good and you should absolutely spend time doing it!  Black Sea Bass are here in very good numbers. Fish any sort of structure with a weighted rig and the right size hook and you’ll be rewarded.  Specifically, there are a lot of fish on the east side of the Island. Fish from Wauwinet down towards Quidnet and drift with the tide in 20-30 ft of water. Make sure you hold bottom and you’ll find pockets of fish. You’ll also see a lot of Fluke in these waters. In order target bigger Fluke, find some deeper water further South of the island has been yielding BIG fish, especially where we have a lot of current moving through.

There are quiet rumors of an offshore bite.  There have been some Tuna off of the Cape and a few more to the south just shy of the Dump.  Our weather has been so good, that this should not surprise us, but it will be another week or two until this really kicks into gear.

In the meantime, enjoy our inshore fishery. It continues to really fun and really productive.

Go wet a line.
