Meet the Artist – Carol Keefe

I am originally from Brooklyn, New York but most of my adult life I have lived outside of Boston. Our summer home is in the Cisco area of Nantucket where we have summered since 1978. The island has entranced my family, including my 3 daughters, with such appreciation of its beauty in all seasons. Sandy Flavin my neighbor and dear friend encouraged me to paint; that was the beginning.

What is your artistic background/education? How did you first get interested in art?
My first career was becoming a registered nurse. A wonderful experience but soon realized I needed more. Then I was a decorator for several years, a gardener, raised three children, many palettes in that combination alone. One evening, Sandy Flavin, and I painted and that was the best beginning of a love affair with a paint brush. I am mostly self taught. Once I started to paint, I took classes at the Decordova Museum School and the Danforth Museum. Fast forward and I have now been a member of AAN for 21 years!

If you could master any other medium than the one you most frequently use, what would it be?
Clay would be my choice, I love the tactile feeling and would love to work creating bodies and busts. It seems so fun to create a pleasant likeness from clay.

What is the most inspirational/influential place on Nantucket for you in terms of your art?
The meeting of sky and sea, the forever changing horizon are my biggest inspirations. Cloud formations are endless and Nantucket’s sky is AMAZING with impossible formations of shape and color.

What is the soundtrack to your creative process?
Energy, which I have a lot of! I often listen to music. I love all genres from classical, blues, jazz and Motown.

What are you currently working on?
I am currently working on several 24 inch square paintings. This is a smaller size than usual so it’s a challenge but all for summer inventory.

Describe your ideal day on Nantucket.
Early morning walk on Cisco beach, volunteering at the Hospital Thrift shop, painting, swimming with my four grandchildren at the beach of their choice, cocktails and dinner with my many dear friends.
What is your inspiration while producing artwork? What are you thinking of and attempting to create?
The feelings of summer on our and the warmth of the sun, movement of clouds, the greens of the landscape and the deep blue sea.
