Maria Mitchell and the Daring Daughters of Nantucket Island
Nantucket is home to stories as bold and inspiring as the ocean that surrounds it—and few shine brighter than that of Maria Mitchell, America’s first female astronomer. This September, you’ll have the chance to step into her world and discover the legacies of Nantucket’s remarkable women during a special guided program:
Maria Mitchell and the Daring Daughters of Nantucket Island
Friday, September 5, 2025 | 2:00 – 4:00 PM
Historic Mitchell House, 1 Vestal Street, Nantucket
Walk in the Footsteps of Trailblazers
Led by the curator of the Maria Mitchell House, this walking tour explores the lives of Nantucket’s famous, infamous, and lesser-known women. From Maria Mitchell herself to whaling wives, Quaker reformers, and daring entrepreneurs, these women defied the expectations of their era.
On Nantucket, where whaling voyages kept men away for months or years, women took on roles and responsibilities rarely seen elsewhere in America at the time. The island’s Quaker traditions, maritime economy, and geographic isolation created unique opportunities for women to lead, innovate, and challenge convention.
