The NHA has a robust September schedule of Decorative Arts Workshops being held at various historic properties and the Whaling Museum. Workshops include Sailor’s Valentines, Textiles, Needlework, Scrimshaw, Calligraphy, Penwork, Metalsmithing, Bandboxes, Decorative Papers, Private Workshops, Nantucket Basket Weaving, Bird Carving, Letterpress, Shaker Bentwood Boxes, and Transferware.

8″ Sailors Valentine with Elizabeth Braun
September 3-5, 9 am–1 pm
With respect for traditional techniques, students will have the opportunity to learn the skills needed to create a unique valentine. Choose from several different patterns to compose your composition, and using the great selection of materials in your kit, you can create a one-of-a-kind treasure.
Eco Dying on Fabric and Paper with Bee Shay
September 4-5, 9 am–1 pm
As the summer turns to autumn the leaves begin to hold on to their tannins, which are perfect for the art of Eco Dying or Eco Printing. Using steam and boiling water we will release the tannins from the leaves into silk, wool and paper leaving behind the image of the leaves from which they came.
Decorated Backgammon Gameboard with Mary Emery Lacoursiere
September 9-12, 9 am–1 pm
Backgammon is a game that has long been a favorite. In this workshop you can create your own board using designs provided that leave room to customize or use as inspiration for your own unique design.
Nantucket Woven Jewelry Basket with Wooden Top with Caitlin Parsons
September 10-12, 1–4 pm
This is the perfect project for both new and experienced weavers. This sweet little dish has a walnut base, turned rim, and top, measuring 3.5″. The solid wood-turned top has a finishing touch of a heart knob.
Chair Caning Repair Clinic with Liz Coffin
September 23-26, 1–3 pm
Reclaim your favorite chair with the historic art of hand-caning. Participants will bring their own chairs and learn how to ready them for repair; select the proper size cane; and restore the original seat pattern.
Nantucket Basket Opera Tote with Caitlin Parsons
September 23-26, 1–4 pm
This is the perfect size purse for a night out or a quick errand. This oval purse is large enough to hold your essentials yet not so large and cumbersome.
This project is for students with weaving experience and expect to do homework during the week to ensure you the purse.
